Why Disney?
Our Magical Year Without Disney began as a boycott after the Walt Disney Company tried to shut down the three-person advocacy group Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood. [Read the New York Times story.]
For me, this was the last straw. I’d had it with Disney. Why?
- The Disney Princesses. I don’t approve of the messages the Princesses are sending to my girls, and girls everywhere, yet I cannot escape them. In fact, I cannot escape Disney.
- Disney’s track record on race, gender, and history. [Here's more.]
- Media consolidation. Disney is one of the big six media owners in the U.S.
- Disney product recalls. You’d think a family-centered company would be a bit more careful.
Certainly there are other companies, products, and industries worth boycotting. But this is why we chose Disney.
